5km
Sub-20 Minutes
Target pace: 3:59/km. An amateur elite goal that requires dedication and quality training.
What you need.
Sub-20 in the 5km is considered the amateur elite mark — requiring a VDOT of 46 or higher. This equates to running 1km around 3:45-4:00 and having a well-developed anaerobic threshold.
If you're already in the sub-22 to sub-23 range, you're within reach. The difference between sub-22 and sub-20 is more about training quality and specificity than volume.

What sub-20 means.
Sub-20 in the 5km is the mark that defines the 'amateur elite'. It represents roughly the fastest 5-8% at popular Brazilian races. It's a goal that takes months of focused work — and one that few people who started running as a hobby ever reach. That's why it carries so much weight.
To get to sub-20, you need a VDOT above 46 — the equivalent of holding a 3:59/km pace for exactly 5 kilometers. That demands not just speed, but specific endurance at 5km pace and a well-developed anaerobic threshold.
Strategy for sub-20.
Sub-20 doesn't forgive pacing mistakes. Go out at 3:45/km for the first 500m (it feels only slightly faster) and you'll pay dearly over the final 2km — often slowing enough to lose 1-2 minutes on your final time.
A proven strategy: km 1 at 4:00-4:02 (it feels too easy, but that's intentional). Km 2-4: 3:58-4:00. Km 5: everything you've got. With control in the early kilometers, you reach km 4 able to accelerate — instead of just surviving.
Split at km 2.5
Come through halfway in 9:58-10:02. If you're faster, hold back. Slower, don't panic yet — pick it up progressively.
How long does it take?
Most runners take 12-18 months of focused training to go from sub-25 to sub-20 — assuming real consistency (4-5 workouts per week with quality sessions).
Starting from sub-23
3-6 months with specific threshold work and 50-60km/week of volume.
Starting from sub-25
6-12 months. You need to build a solid aerobic base before focusing on speed.
Starting from sub-30
12-24 months. It's a long journey and entirely possible — but it takes patience and well-structured progression.
