What you need.

Sub-50 in the 10km requires a Magic Index of 46 — the same as for sub-20 in 5km. These are equivalent and interchangeable goals: a sub-20 runner for 5km has the capacity for sub-50 in 10km.

The difference from 5km lies in specific endurance: you need to sustain 4:59/km pace for 10 more minutes. This requires greater total volume and longer long runs.

What sub-50 means.

Under 50 minutes in the 10km is a mark that puts you in the front pack at big popular Brazilian races. It's the threshold between 'solid runner' and 'competitive runner'. It requires a Magic Index of 46+ — the same needed for sub-20 in the 5km.

The difference between sub-20 in the 5km and sub-50 in the 10km is specific endurance: you need to hold 4:59/km pace for 5km more. That demands greater total training volume, longer long runs and race-pace specificity.

Strategy to break 50 minutes.

Km 1: 5:02-5:05. Km 2-5: 4:58-5:02. Km 6-8: 4:55-4:58. Km 9-10: everything you've got. The temptation to open at 4:50 in km 1 is lethal — the pace fade over the final 3km can cost you 2-3 minutes overall.

Train your race pace. In the final 4 weeks of preparation, include at least 2 workouts with 3-4km continuous at 4:58-5:02/km. Your body needs to memorize that effort before race day.
