Runners racing a half marathon
The classic 21k goal

Half Marathon
Under 2 Hours

Goal pace: 5:41/km. The most chased barrier in road running — and the most achievable with the right training.

5:41/km goal pace·VDOT 36+ required·12-16 wks of preparation

What it takes.

Breaking 2 hours means holding 5:41/km for 21.1k — roughly VDOT 36. As a reference: if you run 10k near 55 minutes or 5k around 26:30, you have the physiological base for sub-2h.

If you currently finish between 2:05 and 2:15, one well-executed 12-16 week cycle is usually enough. Coming from 2:20+, plan two cycles: one for base, one race-specific.

What the training looks like.

Volume

40-55km per week at peak, across 4-5 runs. Consistency beats isolated big weeks.

2 quality sessions

1 tempo run at threshold + 1 interval workout per week. Everything else genuinely easy.

Long run

14-18km, with race-pace blocks in the final weeks of the cycle.

Specificity

In the last 6 weeks, mid-week runs with growing segments at 5:41/km teach your body to hold goal pace.

What sub-2h means.

Running the half under 2 hours puts you ahead of most finishers at any big-city race. It is the line between completing the distance and racing the clock.

It is also the gateway to bigger goals: consolidate sub-2h with structured training and you are one or two cycles away from sub-1:50 — with enough volume base to take on a marathon safely.

Race strategy.

The safest route under 2 hours is a slightly negative split: the first 5k at 5:45-5:48/km, settling into 5:38-5:41 from km 6 on. Opening at 5:20 'to bank time' is the mistake that kills sub-2h attempts at km 17.

Fueling: one gel between 50 and 60 minutes, with water. Drink at every station from km 7. And trust the training — if the race-pace blocks came off in workouts, the race will come off too.
