Half Marathon
Under 1:30

Goal pace: 4:15/km. The mark that defines the high-performing amateur over 21k.

4:15/km goal pace·Magic Index 51+ required·14-18 wks of preparation

What it takes.

Sub-1:30 demands 4:15/km for 21.1k — Magic Index around 51. The references: 10k under 40:30 and 5k under 19:30. Without those times at shorter distances, the road goes through them first.

At this level training is a complete system: 65-85km of volume, two well-separated quality sessions, a long run with pace work, and strength training as routine — not as an accessory.

What the training looks like.

Volume

65-85km per week at peak, across 5-6 runs. Month-after-month consistency matters more than any single week.

2 quality sessions

Tempo runs up to 45 min at threshold + long intervals (1-2km) at 10k pace. Well separated across the week.

Long run

18-22km with substantial race-pace blocks — 2x5km at 4:15 inside the long run is a key session of the cycle.

Specificity

12-15km race-pace simulations in the final 4-5 weeks, plus regular strength work to support the load.

What sub-1:30 means.

Under 1:30 you run among the fastest 3-5% at major races. This is competitive amateur territory — age-group podiums stop being luck and become goals.

The physics is unforgiving at this level: 4:15/km for 21k does not accept improvised weeks. Those who get there train with structure, measure their zones and respect recovery as seriously as the hard sessions.

Race strategy.

Even or slightly negative split: passing 10k between 42:40 and 43:00 is the ideal window. Anything under 42:00 in the first half is usually repaid with interest in the final kilometers.

Gel at minutes 40-50, short frequent sips. At km 16-19 the game is posture and cadence: when the pace slips 3-4 seconds, correcting early is cheap — correcting late is impossible.
