Running
From paved roads to the mountains. Everything you need to know to get started in trail running.
What is trail running.
Trail running is the running modality practiced on natural terrain — mountain trails, forests, fields and deserts. Unlike road running, the focus is on adventure, nature and terrain challenge, not necessarily speed.
Brazil has one of the most vibrant trail running scenes in the world, with events like the Ultra Maratona Internacional da Moreninha, UTMB-Brasil and dozens of regional races.
For road runners, trail is an excellent way to diversify training, reduce impact (soft terrain), strengthen stabilizers and keep motivation high.
Technique for uphills and downhills.
Uphills
Shorten stride, increase cadence. Lean trunk slightly forward. On very steep uphills (>25%), fast power hiking is more efficient than running.
Downhills
The great differentiator in trail. Look 2-3 meters ahead, not at your feet. Elbows out for balance. Land with flat foot, not toe. Downhills are where quadriceps training pays off.
Flat irregular terrain
Shorter stride and more attention to terrain than on road. Shorter steps allow quick adjustments on roots and rocks.
Essential equipment.
Trail shoes
Lugged outsole for traction. Ankle protection and reinforced toe cap. For beginners, a good cost-effective option works.
Hydration vest
Mandatory in races over 15km. Distributes weight better than regular backpacks and doesn't interfere with running.
Poles (for long races)
Reduce 30% of the leg force required on long climbs. Very common in trail ultramarathons.
Portable nutrition
Gels, dates, peanuts and cereal bars. The longer the race, the more diverse the nutritional strategy should be.
Planos de corrida para base aeróbica no trail
Prepare-se para as trilhas com planos estruturados e ritmos calculados.
Why trail running transforms runners.
Running on trails activates more muscle groups than running on pavement. The uneven terrain demands constant postural adjustment, engaging ankle, hip and core stabilizers that stay relatively dormant on flat surfaces.
A University of Utah study showed that joint impact on the knee during trail running is 25-50% lower than on pavement, thanks to the softer surface and the constant variation in impact angle. Fewer repetitive-use injuries.
The psychological component is significant too. Neuroscience research shows that running in natural environments reduces mental rumination, lowers stress markers (cortisol) and increases the sense of well-being compared to urban running.
Your first trail race.
For trail beginners, 5-10km races on moderate terrain are the ideal entry point. The goal isn't the time — it's time on feet. Hiking the steep climbs is strategy, not weakness.
Show up on race day with at least 3-4 training runs on terrain similar to the course. A runner well prepared for uneven ground will beat a fast road runner who has never trained on trails.
Trail etiquette
Yield to runners coming downhill (it's more dangerous). Don't leave the marked path. Carry out everything you bring in — leaving trash on a trail is a serious offense in trail running culture.
Myths about trail running.
Trail is only for ultra athletes
There's trail for every level. Popular races in Brazil offer 5-10km courses on accessible terrain. You don't need to be an ultramarathoner to enjoy it — you just need to get off the pavement.
Trail is more dangerous than the road
The injuries are different, not necessarily more frequent. Trail reduces repetitive-use injuries (tendinitis, IT band syndrome) and slightly raises the risk of sprains. With ankle training and good judgment, the risk is similar.
I need expensive gear to start
A basic mid-priced trail shoe and a water bottle are enough for your first runs. Advanced gear (hydration vest, poles, GPS) makes sense after you've confirmed you love the sport.
