Abner Santana
Developed by Abner Santana, this plan uses the Progressive Adaptive Periodization (PAP) method, designed specifically for 50K ultramarathons and back-to-back race sequences. The methodology combines elements of Lydiard periodization with Jack Daniels' system of intensities, creating an ideal balance between volume and quality. The plan has three distinct phases: (1) a Build phase with progressive long runs and anaerobic threshold work, (2) a Peak phase with race-specific simulations, and (3) a Taper and Transition phase between multiple races. Intensity distribution follows the 80/20 model, with 80% of volume at low intensity and 20% at moderate to high intensity. This scientific approach maximizes physiological adaptations specific to ultras while minimizing the risk of overuse injuries.
